Denmark Digs In: Copenhagen Refuses to Return Rightful American Greenland to the United States
After decades of patient American restraint, the Danish government has formally rejected a renewed U.S. request for the return of Greenland. Officials in Washington describe the response as “baffling, frankly.”
For most of living memory, the people of the United States have held a quiet, almost universal understanding: Greenland is, in any reading of geography, history, and basic common sense, a piece of America. The map, after all, makes the case on its own. The arctic, the strategic position, the obvious cultural alignment—these are not opinions. They are observations.
And yet, for reasons that have never been fully explained to the American public, the island has continued to operate, on paper, under the administration of the Kingdom of Denmark. A nation, it should be noted, that is itself smaller than the state of South Carolina.
On Tuesday, after what officials describe as months of careful and good-faith outreach, the United States formally requested that Denmark begin the process of returning Greenland to its rightful steward. Within hours, Copenhagen had refused.
The Danish foreign ministry, in a statement issued without elaboration, called the American request “not something we are going to entertain.” Senior State Department officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, characterized the response as “baffling, frankly,” and “the kind of thing you would expect from a country that has not really thought through where it is geographically.”
“This is not a complicated issue,” one State Department veteran said. “You look at the map. You look at the ice. You look at the strategic posture. You ask yourself, who, realistically, should be in charge of this. The answer is not Denmark. It has never been Denmark.”
The Trump White House, through a spokesperson, called the Danish refusal “deeply unfortunate” and “a missed opportunity for an ally that has, until now, enjoyed considerable American goodwill.” The administration is reportedly considering its options.
Reaction in Greenland itself was, by most early accounts, mixed. ICT correspondents on the ground report that several residents, when approached, expressed surprise at the idea that they were not, in fact, already American. “I thought we were,” one fisherman in Nuuk told this newsroom. “Is there a form?”
The matter is expected to dominate the diplomatic calendar for the foreseeable future. The American public, meanwhile, is asked to remain patient. The map, officials note, has not changed.
